The topic "The Adoptee Experience" will be discussed at our September forum. Anna Wiltamuth, also known as Kwon Min-hee, will share her story. Anna was born in Daegu, South Korea in 1984, and was adopted at the age of two. Her family consists of her two parents and an older brother who was also adopted from Korea. Anna grew up in Suffolk County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in a predominantly Irish / Italian Catholic suburban community. Aside from attending an occasional culture camp, Anna did not have very much exposure to Korean culture or to other adoptees growing up. It was not until Anna started law school in 2006 that she made the decision to commence a birth-search. It was then that she learned that her birth records were falsified and her adoption history was quite different from the one that she had grown up believing. The summer of 2007 Anna traveled to Korea for the first time since she was adopted. She stayed for two months and during her visit she worked for a month at a rural orphanage in Kwangju and also had the opportunity to meet both of her birth-parents. Anna has now been in reunion since the summer of 2007. Anna continually finds herself trying to find the delicate balance of establishing a relationship with her Korean family, while also trying to understand the complex events that led to her adoption.
Anna is in her third year of law school and holds a B.A. in English Literature. She has been active with Also-Known-As since 2006 and is currently the Board's Secretary. She is also the co-director of the Youth Mentorship program.
